Daniel L. Jacob & Co. is excited to be bringing a new brew to our family of products: Cold Brew Coffee! That’s right, our latest brew is coffee from the Detroit-based Great Lakes Coffee Roasting Company. This family-owned company has a passion for working with farmers to find the best coffee beans; using art and science in turning the beans into nuanced roasts that make Cold Brew Coffee.
What is Cold Brew coffee? This refreshing drink is made by steeping coffee grounds in cold or room temperature water for 12-24 hours, and straining or filtering the resulting brew. The beverage is smooth, full-bodied and intense, with liqueur-like qualities. Steeping for a long period of time using a high grounds-to-water ratio extracts significant concentrations of caffeine that naturally occurs in coffee beans. As a result, cold brew coffee is a perfectly natural, refreshing, and flavorful coffee drink! The cost of cold brew is higher than traditional coffee prep due to the higher concentration of grounds-to-water used. Therefore, the menu price for cold brew coffee is similar to beer, at a range of $4 to $6 for a 12oz pour. The Great Lakes Coffee Roasting Co. kegs two cold brew varieties and Daniel L. Jacob and Co. offer both.
“Still” cold brew is essentially the “new” iced coffee. Iced coffee is traditionally brewed hot, then chilled and served over ice, resulting in a somewhat astringent or tannic flavor that begs for cream or sugar. By contrast, cold-brewed coffee is never heated, thereby preserving the natural sweetness, and fruity or chocolatey flavors of the coffee, resulting in a naturally refreshing and stimulating beverage. We recommend serving our Still cold brew in a chilled pint glass over ice.
“Nitro” cold brew features the effervescence of pressurized nitrogen infusion, and pours best from a specialized Nitro tap, thereby forming a “head” and a shower of cascading bubbles. The result is creamy, mellowed coffee flavor with a smooth and silky mouthfeel. For the coffee purist, Nitro cold brew is best served straight-up in a chilled 12oz tulip glass, although cold brew novices may prefer a chilled pint glass with ice. Nitro cold brew coffee is a genuinely unique coffee experience. Whether “Still” or Nitro, coffee lovers and first-time coffee drinkers alike will discover a genuinely unique coffee experience with cold brew coffee.
